MMO Coated Titanium Anode for Cathodic Protection
ICCP Auxiliary Anode for Pipeline, Tank & Offshore Corrosion Control
Cathodic protection
Cathodic protection is an electrochemical protection technique that includes two primary methods: the sacrificial anode method and the impressed current method. The fundamental principle involves applying an external current to the surface of the corroded metal structure, converting the protected structure into a cathode. This process inhibits the electron migration responsible for metal corrosion, thereby preventing or reducing corrosive damage. Currently, our company is capable of designing and developing MMO anodes in various shapes and specifications based on specific operational environment requirements. These include wire, tubular, rod, ribbon, plate, mesh, and distributed anode systems, tailored to accommodate diverse applications and installation needs.
Titanium Anode Substrate
All titanium substrates used for cathodic protection must be produced using sponge titanium as the raw material and comply with the following standards: GB/T 3621-2007 (Titanium and titanium alloy plates) GB/T 3624-2010 & GB/T 3625-2007 (Titanium and titanium alloy tubes) GB/T 2965-2007 & GB/T 3623-2007 (Titanium and titanium alloy rods and wires) GB/T 26059-2010 (Titanium expanded mesh panels)
Introduction to Accelerated Service Life Test of MMO Titanium Anode
The accelerated service life test of MMO titanium anode is an electrochemical accelerated aging test. It rapidly evaluates the service life, coating stability and corrosion resistance of mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes under laboratory conditions.
Test Principle: Under intensified conditions such as higher current density and electrolyte temperature than actual working conditions, direct current is continuously applied to the anode to accelerate coating consumption and failure. The cell voltage is monitored to judge whether passivation or peeling occurs on the anode coating. Based on the test results, the expected service life of the anode under real service conditions can be estimated. This method greatly shortens the natural aging test cycle which normally takes years or even decades.
Test Items:
- Galvanostatic accelerated aging with continuous cell voltage monitoring
- Coating morphology observation and coating failure threshold detection
- Calculation of accelerated life and conversion to service life under actual working conditions
Applicable Products: Wire, tubular, rod, ribbon, plate, mesh MMO titanium anodes and distributed anode systems.
Test Standard: Relevant electrochemical test standards. Simulated media such as soil and seawater are adopted to replicate typical cathodic protection environments.
Advantages: Compared with field coupon tests, this test features shorter cycle and good controllability. It is applied for product R&D and batch quality inspection, providing reliable data support for material selection in cathodic protection projects.
Brushing Coating Process for Tubular MMO Titanium Anode
Tube brushing coating is one of the core coating preparation processes for tubular MMO titanium anodes. The ruthenium-iridium or iridium-tantalum precious metal oxide precursor solution is evenly applied onto the surface of TA1/TA2 titanium tube substrates by manual brushing.
Process Flow
- Substrate Pretreatment: Degreasing, alkaline cleaning, pickling and sandblasting of titanium tubes to remove surface scale and contaminants, forming a rough active surface for improved coating adhesion.
- Brushing Operation: Inside the tube brushing room, brushes are used to uniformly apply MMO precursor liquid to the outer wall of titanium tubes, with controlled coating thickness per pass.
- Drying: The coated tubes go into an oven for low-temperature drying to evaporate solvents.
- Thermal Oxidation Sintering: High-temperature thermal decomposition converts metal salts into active mixed metal oxide coating.
- Iterative Cycles: Repeat brushing, drying and sintering multiple times until the target coating loading is achieved.
- Finished Product Inspection: Visual check, coating adhesion test and electrochemical performance characterization.
Process Features
- Suitable for tubular and special-shaped anode substrates, low capital investment and high flexibility.
- Controllable coating uniformity, ideal for small-batch and custom tubular MMO anode production.
- Ventilation system equipped in enclosed brushing booth to ensure safe working conditions.
- Strong bonding between coating and titanium substrate, meeting long-term service requirements for cathodic protection.
Applicable Products: Tubular MMO titanium anodes for cathodic protection in soil, fresh water, seawater and other environments.
Cathodic protection ranks among the most critical and efficient engineering technologies for steel structure corrosion control. It is widely deployed for key infrastructure including offshore engineering, oil & gas storage and transportation, municipal pipe networks, and concrete structures. Within Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) systems, the performance of anode materials directly governs the stability, service life and operation & maintenance costs of anti-corrosion systems. Featuring strong corrosion resistance, stable current output, ultra-long service life and customizable design, MMO (Mixed Metal Oxide) titanium anodes have largely replaced traditional materials such as graphite anodes, high silicon cast iron anodes and lead anodes, becoming the preferred core component for modern long-life cathodic protection projects. Focusing on cathodic protection applications of MMO titanium anodes, this paper systematically outlines their technical value, application benefits and industry trends with the latest technological advancements, segmented application scenarios, real engineering cases and measured data, delivering professional references for all types of steel structure cathodic protection works.
Tank bottoms of petroleum and chemical storage tanks, buried long-distance oil and gas pipelines, and gathering pipelines are buried long-term in humid soil with uneven acidity and alkalinity. Aging and damaged anti-corrosion coatings easily trigger localized electrochemical corrosion and pitting perforation, which may lead to hydrocarbon leakage, safety incidents and economic losses. MMO flexible titanium strip anodes, titanium mesh anodes and tubular titanium anodes are adaptable to diverse working conditions such as tank bottoms, dense pipe networks and pipelines in complex terrain. They deliver uniform current distribution, convenient installation and full coverage protection without blind spots, achieving balanced cathodic protection across tanks and pipe networks and eliminating risks of localized corrosion.
With continuous upgrades to global infrastructure anti-corrosion standards and rising demand for rehabilitation of ageing pipe networks and offshore facilities, impressed current cathodic protection systems have become the mainstream industrial anti-corrosion solution, and the market penetration
rate of MMO titanium anodes keeps growing. Current industry technology evolves along three directions: customized coating formulations, lightweight flexible structures, and intelligent integrated cathodic protection systems. Iridium-tantalum composite coated MMO titanium anodes are continuously optimized for extreme operating environments such as deep sea and highly corrosive soil. Lightweight flexible titanium anodes gain wider adoption for complex pipe networks and confined construction spaces. Integrated cathodic protection systems equipped with remote intelligent monitoring enable digital management of anti-corrosion assets and greatly improve project operation efficiency.
Driven by both policy and market factors including offshore new energy development, oil & gas infrastructure upgrades and urban infrastructure renewal, long-life, energy-saving, stable and maintenance-free cathodic protection solutions using MMO titanium anodes will gradually replace conventional anti-corrosion technologies and become the standard configuration for industrial steel structure cathodic protection, boasting broad market prospects.
